Join me for my annual “Spring Ranch Life and Landscape Photo Workshop”. We will be based at the Staubach Creek Ranch near Winston, Montana. We will be staying on the working ranch in the very modern and comfortable guest house.

The workshop begins on Friday, April 12 in the mid-afternoon and will conclude around mid-day on April 14.

We will have a pair of evening and morning landscape shoots during the weekend.  Additionally, we will likely have a three-to-four-hour cattle round-up and calf branding on Saturday during the middle of the day. The occurrence of this event is dependent on the weather between now and then and that day.  In any case we will be able photograph the calves, cattle, ranch scenes, and horses in morning and late-day light.

We will have a full workshop including photo reviews and image editing sessions using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.

Our breakfast and dinner meals will be shared (I provide the food and cook!!) over which we can have discussion time.

Attendance is limited to four participants so there will be plenty of individual, one-on-one instruction, and coaching.

The cost is $850.00/person and includes two nights’ lodging and the breakfasts/dinners. Lunches, snacks and beverages of choice are your responsibility. A $200 non-refundable deposit is required to hold your spot due upon registration. The payment balance is due upon arriving at the location.

Contact me by phone (406-577-6123) or email me at Mark@MarkLaRowePhotography.com to discuss details or reserve your spot. Additional days/nights can be added to the workshop for an additional fee if you wish to extend your experience.

2024 BADLANDS AND BIG SKIES

Glendive, Montana

May 31 - June 4, 2024

$2295/person

Join myself and nationally renowned nature photographer Joseph Rossbach (https://www.josephrossbach.com/) for an amazing foray through the little-known badlands of eastern Montana. Commonly known as “The Big Sky State.”

Montana is primarily known for its 64 named mountain ranges which reside primarily in the western half of the state. However, to the East of the Rocky Mountain Front resides a dizzying array of cap rocks and eroded sedimentary rock.

One of the most under-appreciated set of hoodoos in the country lies in the spectacular Makoshika State Park south of Glendive. Slightly to the northwest of Glendive is the relatively unknown Terry Badlands Wilderness Study Area. The Terry Badlands is reminiscent of the well-known Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Its features includes colorful, banded cliffs that overlook the beautiful rolling prairie. Exploration will reveal sandstone arches, spires, mesas, and buttes riven by deep gullies.

To the east of Glendive, via a 1-hour drive, lies famed Theodore Roosevelt National Park, named after the 26th president of the United States. Theodore Roosevelt National Park offers amazing opportunities to photograph rolling prairie, mixed badlands and variety of wildlife including Bison, Coyotes, Big Horn Sheep, Prairie Dogs and much more wildlife. A perfect example of wind and water erosion. In June, the prairie erupts with a colorful array of wildflowers.

The crown jewel is the monsoon season in eastern Montana which typically lasts from Mid-May through June. The storms that arise over the endless plains are fueled by the sun-warmed earth, which in turn causes the air to rise and create beautiful, towering cloud formations. Tremendous thunderstorms can be viewed over the badlands and prairie literally hundreds of miles in each direction offering an amazing backdrop for the unique foreground geology and flora.

Itinerary:

Day One:

We will kick the workshop off starting at 2:00pm at the hotel where Joe and Mark will be giving several presentations on best techniques and workflow for photographing this amazing area of prairie and badlands. After class, we will head out into the field for an afternoon sunset shoot.

Days Two through Four:

Each day we will be out well before sunrise to get to amazing locations to capture first light and early morning golden hour. In the early afternoon, on each day, we will have classroom sessions covering photo processing and image critiques. Each afternoon, after class, we will be out in the field chasing monsoon storms, amazing light and unique photo locations.

Day Five:

After a sunrise/morning shoot we will conclude the workshop back at the hotel no later than 10:00am providing everyone enough time to pack-up, check out of the hotel and be on the road.

Level of Difficulty:

Easy to moderate. There will be some hikes that may involve walking up to 2 miles round trip over mixed terrain including loose dirt and/or rock and clay badlands with some elevation going up and down small hills. Clay badlands are slippery and sticky when wet.

Key Features:

    •  Gain a strong technical and creative foundation in outdoor photography.

    •  Learn the importance of “seeing the light,” weather forecasting and location scouting.

    •  Learn how to use filters in the field to control dynamic range.

    •  Learn strategies for making dynamic compositions that have energy and engage the viewer.

    •  Learn how to choose aperture and hyperfocal focusing for depth of field.

    •  Bring your images to life using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop (beginner and advanced techniques).

    •  Get individual instruction and critique in the field as well as classroom.

    •  Photograph badlands, hoodoos, big sky prairies, wildlife and classic western landscapes.
